In Memorium: John Chuchel

John Chuchel died May 19 after a long illness. He was 80.

Born in Winona, Minn., John moved to Sacramento in 1979. A theoretical mathematician, he was educated at St. Mary’s College in Winona, Minn., the University of Minnesota and Montana State University under the advisor Norman Henry Eggert, Jr.

In Memorium: G. Thomas Sallee

George Thomas Sallee died unexpectedly in the early evening of Saturday, June 15, 2019, at the UCD Medical Center of hemorrhagic stroke.

Tom was born in Nyssa, a little farming community in eastern Oregon on the banks of the Snake River. He worked in the sugar beet fields and packing shed, became an Eagle Scout, and enjoyed a very happy childhood. 

In Memorium: Melven R. Krom

Professor Emeritus Melven Robert Krom passed away September 28, 2018. 

Melven received his Ph.D. in 1963 at the University of Michigan under John West Addison, Jr. with the dissertation Separation Principles in the Hierarchy Theory of Pure First-Order Logic. He joined the Department as a Lecturer in 1962, and was brought on as a professor the year after. During his time as a professor at UC Davis, his research focused on logic and set theory.

In Memorium: David G. Mead

David G. Mead passed away on September 19, 2016, at the age of 94. 

 

He began study at Columbia University in New York, but delayed his degree with the start of World War II. He served as a sergeant in the US Army in the Pacific theater. When David returned after his honorable discharge in 1946, he earned his Ph.D. in 1959 with the dissertation Linear and Nonlinear Differential Polynomials. He met his wife, Alba Saba, while at Columbia, and began his teaching career there. 

In Memoriam: Allan Edelson

We are sad to report the passing of Professor Emeritus Allan Leonard Edelson on May 25, 2014 due to complications relating to Alzheimer's. 

In Memoriam: Evelyn M. Silvia

Evelyn Silvia, professor of mathematics at UC Davis, died peacefully in her sleep early in the morning of January 21, 2006, at Woodland Memorial Hospital, following a courageous battle with ovarian cancer.

She was born on February 8th, 1948 in Fall River, Massachusetts. She received her Ph.D. in Mathematics in 1973 from Clark University. In 1973 she joined the faculty at UC Davis, where she spent her entire career as a professor of mathematics. She is survived by her husband Doyle Cutler, a professor emeritus of Mathematics at UC Davis.
