The New Graduate AWM Chapter: Finding Fun and Community in Math

We are so excited to have revitalized a graduate chapter of the Association of Women in Mathematics in our Department this year! At my undergraduate institution, both undergraduate and graduate AWM chapters existed and frequently collaborated, but it was also valuable for each group to have its own space and events tailored to their experiences and needs. After talking with other graduate students at Davis, it quickly became clear that there was a strong interest in creating a similar community here. Everyone was enthusiastic and excited to help get the chapter off the ground, and we are very lucky to have a strong team helping to organize each event!

After nearly two quarters of being fully active, we are proud to say the chapter has hosted around five events each quarter. Our events have focused on both community-building and academic engagement, including study jams, professor talks, chalk drawings outside MSB, a SET tournament, and a collaborative graduate student panel with the undergraduate AWM chapter. These events have helped foster connections between students across different years and research areas while creating a welcoming and supportive environment in the Department.

We hope to continue expanding the chapter’s impact through various events and outreach efforts. We are excited to keep growing our community in the Math Department, strengthening connections and creating opportunities to support graduate students of underrepresented genders. Keep a lookout for our flyers and event announcements, and stop by to say hi!
